New Address for Mobile Internet Sites - .mobi
(The Economic Times, 16th June, 2006)

INTERNET access on mobile phones is expected to get a new dimension. Domain names under '.mobi', popularly referred to as Dotmobi, is the latest to hit the worldwide web. The difference being that it is meant specially to access internet content on the mobile phone. Currently, mobile phone users can browse internet sites through the handset but the majority of the content remains inaccessible.

This is due to the lack of compatibility on the technology front. As of now for the site to be easily viewed on a cell phone it needs to be WAP or GPRS compatible. There are many sites which do not have this feature leading to limited access to web content on the go for a mobile user. Websites registered under Dot-mobi will be optimised to provide content easily across all telecom technologies.

Given that in India there are 100 million mobile phone users which is much higher compared to the number of PC users, the market potential is much greater for Dotmobi.

Jasjit Sawhney, CEO of Net4, one of the largest domain name registration firms in India, said, "The market potential for Dotmobi is fairly large in India. We expect about 30,000-40,000 registrations under it by the end of this year. We are already talking to groups like Bharti and Tata for the new domain name. "He added that the telecom operators stand to gain if Dotmobi turns out to be a success as it would lead to increased ARPU as the data usage on mobile phones will be much higher.
