Net4India eyes 35% growth

Net 4 India Ltd has just unveiled plans to expand its broadband services all across India after implementing successful pilots in Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi. Chief Executive Officer of the company Jasjit Sawhney spoke to Suman Layak on the plans to tie up with last mile players like cable operators all over India.

Tell us about your expansion plans in India.
It is an absolutely huge effort. We are trying to reach the customer in urban and rural cities of India right now. Primarily small and medium enterprises that are the last mile operators are our targets. We are tying up with cable operators and cyber cafes and will provide voice over IP telephony and video conferencing facilities through these channels on an always-on system. We have our own billing and service module that we would like to implement.

As of now we are planning to sign up a minimum of 250 last mile operators in 10 cities by the end of the calendar year. Each one will have at least 150 users. We will have at least 45,000 users, probably much more but that is the absolute minimum that we are targeting.

What do you think could be the killer applications?
Voice over IP is one application that has a great future. Then there will be video streaming, entertainment and info-data services. Wi-fi is also coming up and that could increase the last mile connectivity. The use of Wi-fi is restricted to within the building but that is going to be expanded.

What kind of a revenue model are you implementing?
The always-on aspect of our service will drive the entire growth. We will be charging Rs. 750 per month from the customer. The last mile operator will be entitled to a commission on this. This will be suited to small office home office segment as well as the small users with a PC at home.

How will this impact your sales figures?
In the last financial year, that is 2002-2003 we had recorded Rs 30 crore of sale and a profit of Rs 1.8 crore. In the current fiscal we are looking at a 35 percent growth on that figure. You can say that we will be looking at doubling our sales in that year.
